FAQ on Biosecurity and Bird Flu
Here's what people often ask us
Is Bird Flu in NZ?
No, the bird flu variant that we are concerned about is not currently in NZ or Australia.
Are Eggs and Poultry safe to eat?
HPAI (Bird Flu) is not a food safety concern. It is safe to eat:
- properly handled and cooked poultry meat, eggs, and egg products
- pasteurised milk and milk products
- cooked beef.
This is because avian influenza viruses are sensitive to heat treatment, so even if we had HPAI in New Zealand, cooked food and pasteurised milk products will be safe to consume.
I run poultry or other birds that are dear to me how can I protect them?
Please keep in mind that there is no cause for panic, and HPAI bird flu is not in NZ. However, being prepared is key. A good place to start is to head over to the Ministry for Primary Industries website, it is a good resource. Simply click this link
Im a commercial egg farm what can I do?
These are good resources to look at:
- MPI Website
- EPF Website (member section)
- Read the Industry's "Weekly update" email.
- Connect with a poultry vet expert. My top pick is Hatch House NZ
